Risala – A handbook on Maliki Fiqh by Imam Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani is a comprehensive guide to Maliki Jurispridence. This book is devoted to educating youth on: essential subjects such as Aqeedah (Islamic Creed), Purification, Salah, Zakah, Sawm, human dealings ranging from sales and business transactions, family law including marriage, divorce, inheritance and rulings on less encountered subjects such as hunting, criminal law, warfare, treatment for evil eye and remembrance. This is an important treatise by one of the early pioneers of Muslim education which gained prominence at the time and has remained popular with scholars ever since.
Abu Muhammad. Abdullah ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani was born in 310H (in the city of Al-Qayrawan, Tunisia. He was an accomplished scholar who dedicated his life to educating Muslims during very difficult times. Imam Ibn Abi Zayd’s strong interest in education was fostered in his own city, Al-Qayrawan which remained a major Islamic centre for scholarship and education for many centuries. He had the opportunity to study under many illustrious scholars such as Ibn-al-Haddah, Ibn al-Labbad, Habib ibn-ar-Rabi amongst others. He wrote about 35 books and treatises, some of which ran into many volumes such as An-Nawader wa’z-Ziyadat, recently published in 15-volumes edition exceeding 8000 pages.
